I'm sitting here and waiting for the nurse to come in and tell me what today's counts were. In the meantime, things have been changing. They switched me from TACRO IV to mouth yesterday. That's one less drip I have going. Tacrolimus is an immuno-suppresant. I'll be taking that one for a while. They've also discontinued the TPN drip. That was the IV Nutrition I had. There's only one stipulation for that one, I must eat and drink. Staying properly hydrated is crucial since the Tacro and other drugs can harm the kidneys. I'm still getting IV anti-biotics, IV anti-fungals and IV anti-virals periodically during the day. These will all be switched to orally administered drugs. They've also cut back significantly on the Zofran (anti-nausea) mainly because I haven't really been nauseaus. We'll have to see how that goes.
If all goes according to plan, I should be home for the weekend. I'll have to see the doctor twice a week for a while, and then it starts tapering off. Once I get home, though there will be some strict rules regarding what foods I can and can't eat. Fresh fruits and vegetables are off limits. Anything cooked in a home kitchen -- as long as it's cook well -- is ok. No restaurant foods. No supermarket prepared foods. (Autumn, I'm pretty sure your meatballs are on the OK list! G, your chicken soup is there, too.) I'm also going to have to limit the number of visitors until I get stronger. Mom (the warden) says that "visiting is by appointment only and no longer than 20 minutes."
OK. My counts came in and my WBC is 2.0 -- the same as yesterday. They told us that there would be plateaus. I also did a lap around the hall. My doc said he wants 5 laps today. That's it for now.
Dear Leah,
ReplyDeleteWe're so happy the counts are going up. Those little critters are taking to you more and more. Keep up the good work. Peter and I will keep praying for you.

gary & randie
I assume that my food is off limits for you
Sounds like you are right on track - I am so excited for you. Ask your dr. if you can have thick skinned fruits. I was allowed bananas as long as someone else peeled them for me, pineapple as long as someone else cut it up, etc. Only the ones where you don't eat the skin, someone else had to wash them thoroughly and then prepare them for me. Oranges were o.k. too. Meats, eggs, etc had to be cooked til burnt. How exciting that you can go home soon. Call me anytime you want or just feel like chatting.

Hey Leah,
ReplyDeleteI think we shocked each other when I entered your hospital suite o Tuesday and in unison we exclaimed "What are you doing here??". For me my day started out routine as I entered the hospital and started my usual route visiting the Jewish patients representing The Rivkah Laufer Bikur Cholim and Volunteer Pastoral Care of the NY Presbyterian Hospital. When I saw the name Leah Solomon, I thought....hmmm common name for sure, it couldn't be you!! Even for a free spirit like me I wish that day would have been typically routine.
Well I meant it when I said you look wonderful. It wasn't until afterwards when I signed onto your blog and caught up on the challenges that you and your wonderful family have heroically endured. Leah Rivkah bat Yehudit Chana...We wish you a complete and speedy refuah shlema. I'll be by later with some yummy snacks that I sure hope is on the OK to eat list. Glad your heading out of there. Nice view, but there's no place like home.
Lotsa Love,
Gayle & Josh Yashar
